Like many people, when I first learned of Law of Attraction, I was transformed. It was like a doorway was opened that allowed the truth that I always knew was there to flow in. For at least two months I existed in a state of near constant euphoria. If I caught a negative thought in my head, I laughed it off and changed it to something positive. I was less easily angered and annoyed - almost nothing could permeate my fantastic mood, and if it did my anger or annoyance didn’t last for more than a few minutes. It was fantastic!

Eventually I came down from this “natural high” and began to experience my normal range of emotions again, which of course included some negative ones. As you might imagine, I found this to be very alarming! Every time I felt “bad” feelings, I tried and tried to push those negative emotions away and to only allow myself to feel good, but it didn’t work! Of course, then the negative thoughts began to multiply, “what am I doing wrong?” “This is horrible!” “Why am I doing this to myself?!” “I’m going to ruin my chances at happiness!” …all of which only lead me to feel worse! I was in a tailspin of panic and self-flagellation.

Luckily, I already had a well-established habit of introspection and self-awareness that allowed me to come to the following realization pretty quickly:

Whether or not my negative emotions were interfering with my ability to use LOA to create the life I wanted, making myself more miserable because I was feeling miserable was pointless and even more counterproductive to my ability to consciously work with LOA.

I decided I wanted to find a better way to deal with my negative emotions so that they would not interfere with my ability to make the most of LOA in my life. So, I did a lot of reading: Abraham-Hicks, Joe Vitale, Eckhart Tolle, Collette Barron-Reid, and others. What I came up with is this: we have nothing to fear from our emotions. They are the frequency upon which the information that we are broadcasting to the Universe is carried. Being afraid of them is synonymous with being afraid of a television signal. Just because the signal sometimes carries “bad” news, does not mean that the signal itself is a threat. The gift of our emotions is that we have the ability to receive our own signal…by feeling what we feel, we are able to remain informed about the kind of frequency we are broadcasting, which helps us make informed decisions about what we choose to focus our attention on and the actions we choose to take. Similar to the way that physical pain is part of the mechanism that keeps our bodies well, our emotions are part of the mechanism that keeps us well mentally and spiritually. Which means that we have everything we need to make choices that help us live the most joyful and satisfying lives possible.

Realizing the value of so-called “negative” emotions makes it a lot easier to choose to allow them to come and go as they do naturally, which is generally a heck of a lot faster than when we get all caught up in worrying about them and how to “get rid” of them, or worse try to deny that they’re there to begin with. The key is to acknowledge them in order to gain access to the information that they are providing, without feeding them with excessive worry and focus of attention by then trying to force them to change or to go away. Keep in mind that in order for the information to be useful to you, you have to figure out how exactly it is about you and your habits and/or choices. Sometimes you might come to the conclusion that there is nothing that needs to be changed other than how you think about a certain situation, other times you may have a limiting belief that needs to be addressed, and still other times you might find that a drastic change in your behavior “in the world” is necessary.

The Law of Attraction is the most powerful law in the universe. It states that like attracts like. Focus on what you do want - not what you don’t want. If you can eliminate don’t want from your vocabulary, your life will get a lot easier. Whenever you catch yourself talking about what you don’t want, say: Cancel! Cancel! Cancel! And then state what you do want.

Question:

I get the Law of Attraction and I love it! However, I’ve noticed that in the midst of a crisis (break-up, lay-off, health issues, etc.) it can be brutally difficult to stay in attracting energy. How do you recommend applying the Laws of Attraction when faced with negative life circumstances?

Jane - What you’re experiencing is not uncommon. A lot of times individuals pressure themselves, thinking they must always be in a high vibration.

When a bad mood, crisis or awful job hits, it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole. Back in the day, I used to get mad at myself when I couldn’t stay at a high vibration, because I felt that I should (note: whenever you feel like you should do something, you’re off track - choose what is perfect for you!). Feeling those should’s is definitely not productive and only ensures that you attract more of the same.

Here are a few of my suggestions and an example for pulling yourself out of a mood and back into a higher vibration:

* Read Jerry & Esther Hick’s Ask And It Is Given

They discuss what’s called the vibrational scale of well being. The scale is described as emotional set points, similar to a fuel tank. Emotions can range from depression to joy. It’s practically impossible to go from a negative emotion to bliss.

* Listen to a fun and happy song (right now, I’m loving Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae)

* Reach out to a friend - go have coffee & find out what’s happening in her world

* Dance. It’s an amazing release!

And, when all else fails there’s always - chocolate and shopping!

The basis of the Law of Attraction is that you attract things and circumstances that are operating at the same vibrational level that your thoughts are.

The higher that you keep your mental vibration, the better things you can bring to yourself that are also at that higher vibrational level. For instance, when you are start out having a really great day - things just seem to fall into place and keep getting better. However, it works the opposite way as well. When you are having a “bad” day and are vibrating at a lower level, one bad thing after another seems to occur.

So obviously the trick is to do everything in your power to stay at a higher vibrational level. Sounds easy enough, but as you know, sometimes hard to put into practice in everyday life. It sounds great to have someone tell you “just think positive” but how do you do that after you have just a disagreement with a spouse, child, co-worker, bill collector or whatever the case may be?

The answer is mental distraction and this is where great technology can come in. You have probably experienced in the past that sometimes you just can’t get a bad mood out of your system on your own. While I personally love meditation, I also know it is sometimes very difficult to quiet your mind enough after a confrontation to reap the benefits of the practice.

This is where places like YouTube can offer a fun and easy fix. There are so many entertaining, funny and inspiring videos that you can obtain in as little as 5 minutes that can give you the distraction that you need, if even for just a few moments.

For instance, did you know that you can find all 4 Rocky “workout montage scenes” on YouTube? I don’t know about you, but I find I can’t help but feel inspired every time I watch those scenes in any of the movies. If you find yourself in a place where you just can’t seem to get the energy up to accomplish what lies before you on a certain day, I highly recommend you watch 2 or 3 of these clips to get the flow of inspiration. It takes as little as 3 minutes each to watch each clip, but the feeling can stay with you all day long.

How about laughter? I have two clips in my YouTube favorites category that make me laugh every single time I watch them. One is from the old Carol Burnett Show where Tim Conway goes off on a tangent about Siamese elephants just to make his costars laugh. It is called “Tim Conway Elephant Story“. If you type it in the YouTube search box, it will bring it right up. (Or you can go to my website for a direct link.) The last few seconds with Vicki Lawrence are priceless. The second is a hysterical laughing baby titled “Hahaha“. I find that watching either one of these clips changes my mood instantly. Maybe someday I will get bored of them and will have to look for more favorites, but I can promise you it won’t be anytime soon.

How about an inspirational ending of one of your favorite movies? I have the endings of Flashdance, Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Grease, a clip from FAME and many others I just enjoy tuning into for a quick feel-good boost. (I know… I know… they are all chick flicks - but heh it works for me!)

Favorite upbeat song? It is on YouTube. Favorite old commercial? Chances are it is there too.

Want inspiration? Watch the last 5 minutes of the Shawshank Redemption (titled The Shawshank Redemption - Final Scene - Movie Ending ), or the last ten minutes of it’s a Wonderful Life (under It’s A Wonderful Life Ending). I cry with happy tears every time.

I even found the opening segments of some of my favorite childhood shows that bring a touch of nostalgia. They have the opening song for H.R. Pufinstuf, Sigmund and The Sea Monsters, The Land of the Lost and all the other corny Saturday morning shows I used to watch growing up. You try and stay in a bad mood while the song H.R. Pufinstuf keeps playing through your head.

Looking for a spiritual boost? The Secret has a great Video out titled “ The Secret Riches Visualization Tools“. An awesome video to watch while having coffee first thing in the morning or when you first arrive at work. It can set the tone for the rest of your day. There a ton more inspirational videos like that as well from all different sources. Just type in Law of Attraction in the search box.

Anyway, you get the gist of it. Think of the unusual. Something that tickles your particular fancy and give yourself a ten minute boost period.

Most importantly, do not feel guilty about it or feel as if you are just wasting time. You cannot put your time to better use, than making yourself feel better first - before taking any kind of action from a negative place. You will see a drastic difference in the outcome. (I do recommend however, waiting until the boss steps away for a moment before playing them. I don’t know if they will be as understanding about your needed attitude adjustment.)

So, go and make yourself feel better in a quick, cheap and easy way!

There is much more to the Law of Attraction than just thinking a thought and waiting for all of your dreams to come true. The true worth comes when you embark on the treasure hunt within yourself.

You are comprised of every thought and perception that you have ever had and continue to have. This includes every thought and belief system that your ancestors had whether they are alive or have passed on, and every societal thought that has crossed your path that you have paid attention to. This is what makes each one of us so different and so special; there are no two who are alike.

What you choose to accept (or not accept) into your world can make a huge difference when attaining the life that you desire. You may have repetitive mental thoughts that are yours but actually stem from the belief of an ancestor that has long since gone, yet the mental pattern still lives within you. Even if you have a direct perception of another completely from their viewpoint, you will either accept this viewpoint or not. When you are a young child, you receive many views that make you who you are today and you may have accepted a belief system without ever knowing why. It has become one of your repetitive mental patterns. You may also have adopted a belief and morphed it into something completely different than what it actually was intended to be.

Now that you know about the Law of Attraction, you can begin to direct your wants and desires and actually achieve what you want to create in your life. But first you want to examine your repetitive mental patterns and keep the keeper and rid yourself of the ones that could be stopping you from actually attaining your desires. When you flush the ones you no longer need, it’s important to assign a replacement mental pattern to fill the void of the one that is no longer there. When you begin to think of the old pattern, you’ll want to readily replace it with the new mental pattern. This will take some practice but it is worth it because at that point you will be well on your way to achieving your dreams through the Law of Attraction. But make sure you remain steadfast and refrain from sliding back into your old repetitive mental patterns. It is so easy to do when you first begin changing to reflect what it is that you truly want to attain.

Grab a notepad and write down all the things that you feel are problems in your life; the ones that you would like to change making sure to list your feelings about these challenges and why they’ve become a part of your life.

Let’s say that your goal is to enjoy a career that you love while earning more than enough money. Write this down. Then ask yourself why you think you can’t attain it. Perhaps your answer is, “You have to work a nine-to-five job and get paid what they give you. Life isn’t about fun.” Where did this mental pattern come from? Did you hear your dad say it over and over again when you were a teen or maybe your great grandpa who struggled through the Great Depression and never quite got over it?

When you pinpoint the source of the pattern that you aren’t happy with, change it and note the change next to the old mental pattern. Drill it in your head (figuratively speaking, of course!). Know your new mantra forward and backward and the next time you experience a moment when you don’t think you can possibly accomplish something, you’ll have your new mental pattern established, ready to serve you much better than the negative repetitive pattern ever did.

With some changing of some engrained habits (and that’s all they are: Habits) you can be the person you truly want to be, and have the things that you ever dreamed of.
