“The Law of Attraction” is a term being used by many self improvement programs. From “The Secret” to “The Great Work,” many groups include this as part of their curriculum. What exactly is it?

The Law of Attraction, in its simplest form, is explained by the statement, “Like attracts like.” It was first made popular by a group called Abraham-Hicks in its self improvement program. This little three-word statement has a wide variety of applications.

The idea of this Law in terms of self improvement is that whatever attitude you put out into the world will be reflected back at you. It may seem to be as easy as changing your outlook to a positive one. In fact, it is every bit as easy, and every bit as difficult as that.

The first trick in learning to apply the Law of Attraction is that you have to train your mind to keep a positive mindset. It’s easy enough to conjure up a feeling of well being in most cases, but the difficulty is maintaining it. In the cases where it’s not so easy to conjure up a positive outlook, like when post-traumatic stress or clinical depression is involved, assistive techniques are sometimes used.

After the brain has been taught that this is the desired attribute, the difficulty is in keeping it. At this stage, it is imperative the user trains himself or herself to not react to negative stimuli. This is the hard part, and it is most often where people fail in applying the Law of Attraction in their lives. We as a society are constantly bombarded with negative stimuli.

It’s not just what’s on the nightly news, either. Bad wiring in homes has been known to create “fear boxes,” or rooms that due to their electromagnetic fields can cause anxiety, hallucinations and even physical illness. Driving a car causes a degree of anxiety. The sounds of alarm clocks, car horns, telephones and doorbells all will often cause an initial panic response.

Ultimately, the trick to succeeding at applying the Law of Attraction lies in one’s ability to remain focused on well being despite all this negativity. Another way of putting it is, “smiling in the face of adversity.” If you can do that, you can succeed at the Law of Attraction.
